Dawn Of The Dead 2004 Outside The Mall
This scene from dawn of the dead is when the zombies have just started taking over the world, they escape them by hiding in the mall. This uses institutional context as consumerism in america is popular and the film tries to get this across.
This also uses the narrative loneliness and isolation as the characters are all alone in the mall together and isolated from the outside world.
This scene uses Propp & Todorov's narrative theory as the equilibrium of the film is disrupted by the zombie attack on the world. This was proven in their book Morphology of the Folktale (1928). The common characters that reoccur in most films is the economy of narration which is the zombie outbreak, the goal-directed protagonist which is the survivors such as Anna, Kenneth and Michael. The antagonist the zombies.

Dawn Of The Dead 2004 Escape On Boat
This scene is one of the final ones in the film, where the survivors escape the zombies on the boat leaving Michael behind as been bitten by one of the zombies. This scene uses Cinematography of Close Ups on Anna's face to show the emotions on her face when she says goodbye to Michael who she has fallen for since the zombie apocalypse began. The scene also uses Historical Context as the american flag is shown in the background to depict freedom of them escaping from the zombies. Which could mean the terrorists as the war in Afghanistan began about the time the film was released and the terrorists are depicted as the zombies in the film. This proves Janet Staiger Audience Studies (Interpreting Films 1992) which is that different audiences react differently to the same film, as the audience at the time will still be concerned about terrorists as 9/11 is still in their minds so the flag in the background shows that America is freedom from the zombies in the film.Thursday, 12 March 2015
Dawn Of The Dead 2004 Monica Chainsaw Scene
The first scene from Dawn Of The Dead 2004 is when Monica gets chainsawed to death whilst trying to escape the shopping mall and fending off the zombies. This scene uses body horror/gore which is an institutional context as loads of gore in horror films is popular in the 2000's as gore is used in other areas such as video games and the News so everyone is used to the gore. It also uses Cinematography as it uses Close ups and Expressionist Angles get across the panic in the scene and the claustrophobic it makes the audience feel. This scene proves Thomas Schatz Theory Hollywood Genres 1979 as the gore in the film highlights the film is a gory horror film so the right audiences watch the film and appeal to their target audiences.
The scene uses creepy locations and Low key lighting to make the gore more scary as emphasises it as is the only thing you can see in the film.

Friday The 13th Trailer Review
Name of Film: Friday The 13th
Year Released: 1980
Genre Of Trailer: Horror/Mystery
The plot of the trailer is that it goes through all of the murders in the film counting each one dies, until the thirteenth one when it ends with the name of the film Friday the 13th and telling you to go watch the film in the cinemas.
The good points of the trailer is that the music used in the trailer adds emphasis to the trailer itself building up the tension and adding a bit of mystery to how and why the thirteen murders occur during the plot of the film. It also doesn't give away much of the plot of the film which allows you to watch the trailer and get enticed to watch the film but unsure of what is going to actually happen throughout the film.
The bad aspects of the trailer is that it lacks any sort of horror in the trailer and is more like a mystery trailer so when people watch the trailer they will think that it is a mystery trailer where in fact it will contain horror aspects that the audience may not enjoy. It also gives away who dies in the film so when the characters get introduced in the film you immediately know that they are about to die which kind of ruins the tense of seeing who dies in the film. There is also bad editing used at the end of the trailer which looks amateurish so makes people think that the film is going to be amateurish overall which may lead to less people wanting to watch the film when it is shown in the cinemas or on DVD.
The score i would give this trailer is a four out of ten as it doesn't have any horror aspects in it what so ever and also looks like it was made by amateurs so isn't going to be as good as the other horror films like halloween or dawn of the dead.

Halloween Trailer Review
Name Of Film: Halloween
Year Released: 2007
Genre Of Trailer: Horror
The plot of the trailer is it shows what has happened since the last film whilst the murderer in the first film is prison and has just got out, it also briefly tells the plot of the new film and what the murderer is planning to do when he has got out of prison.
The good points of the film is that it uses collision cutting really well to get across the tense moments happening in the trailer. It also uses quick slow montage well to get across the jump scares and more horror moments in the trailer to get across the fact it is a pure horror film to attract fans of the genre and also fans of the previous film. It also uses the iconic music from the first film at the end of the film so if people watching the film will remember the first film by the iconic music.
The bad points of the film was again the lack of gore as there was only a few restricted narration shots to get across of it being a horror film but without those shots taken out wouldn't look anything like a horror trailer and like an action thriller trailer instead which doesn't reflect the genre of the trailer at all.
Shaun Of The Dead Trailer Review
Name Of Film: Shaun Of The Dead
Year Released: 2004
Genre Of Trailer: Horror/Comedy
The plot of the trailer builds up the story of what happens in the movie by showing some of the best bits of the movie to entice the audience to watch the film in the cinema. It mainly shows comedic shots from the film as is mainly a comedy film but does show some horror aspects to get across to the audience that is also a horror film.
Good aspects of the trailer is it uses collision cutting well as the comedic shots in the film are slow to get across the comedy, straight into a fast paced horror shot to get across to the audience that is a Horror and Comedy film. It also produces well on the comedy aspects unlike most other horror/comedy films, such as the Toxic Avenger which if done badly can make the trailer cheesy and may get the people that watch it think the film is bad based on the trailer.
Bad aspects of the trailer is that the ending of the trailer isn't that great as has nothing to do with the main story of the film, just to add a final comedic scene to the trailer, where in my opinion should have been a jump scare or gore to get across to the audience that it's a horror film and not a comedy film. It also doesn't deliver on gore as it is a horror film, the only notable gore in the trailer is the slight shot of a zombie being impaled in a tree meaning there is gore in the movie but not a lot of it was shown in the trailer so if people viewing the trailer like it and go and watch the movie and be suprised off the gore which they don't like will be disappointed whilst watching the film.

Toxic Avenger Trailer Review
Name Of Film : Toxic Avenger
Year Released: 1985
Genre Of Trailer: Horror/Comedy
The trailer is a highlights trailer showing the best bits of the film and the plot of the film with a narrator promoting the film.
The good aspects of the trailer was it got across the comedy aspects of the film well which is difficult to do in a Horror Comedy as most of them usually forget the Comedy in them and don't sell as well as other types of the Horror Genre.
The negative aspects of the trailer that it was too long nearly 2:30 mins long where as most trailers are about 1-1:30 mins long as people watching this trailer may get bored of it after 2 mins so wont remember it so wont want to go see the film in the cinema. It may have got the comedy aspect of the trailer right but hasn't got many horror aspects in the film at all and the ones it has got look weird and not very realistic so looks like the film is made on a cheap budget unlike other horror films like Dawn Of The Dead and Evil Dead. The lack of gore may also be because of the era of the film as was set in the mid 80's it wont be as gory as films from today as we see a lot worse gore in other media such as the News and video games.
The class average score for this trailer was a 3.5 as Horror Comedy's are risky to make as it is difficult to make a film have lots of horror and gore but make it funny as well only a few films have managed to make a good comedy/horror movie such as Shaun Of The Dead which manages to do this very well unlike the Toxic Aveneger.

Dawn Of The Dead 2004 Trailer Review
Name of Film: Dawn of the Dead
Year Released: 2004
Genre Of Trailer : Horror
The trailer shows what is about to happen in the film with a
calm evening in a small American town and then when the sun rises, the world
has been taken over by zombies and only a few humans have survived. The trailer
shows the main characters in the film and also loads of shots of the zombies to
emphasise how important the zombies are in the movie.
The positive aspects about this trailer is that it starts
with a slow build up to get across to the audience who the final girl is in the
film. Quick montage is also used to emphasise the panic of the zombies
attacking. The trailer also shows most of the main characters in the film, but
doesn’t reveal much about them so the audience has to watch the film to find
out more about the characters.
The negative aspects about this trailer is that too much of
the plot is given away, so when people watch the film they will know roughly
what is about to happen during the film. There was also not enough gore used in
the trailer and too much action so when people watch the trailer they’ll think
it is an action film and not a horror. There were also too many fades and the
font used wasn’t that great which may put off horror fans as the font may not
be horror enough to suit the target audience of the film.
The overall class average of the film was 6.5 because it was
a decent trailer but It didn’t use enough horror in the trailer so it doesn’t
come across as a horror film and it attracts the wrong sort of audience for the
film.
Cloverfield Trailer Review
Name of Film: Cloverfield
Year Released: 2008
Genre of Trailer: Horror
The trailer is a scene trailer meaning it shows 1 scene from
the film in the trailer to give the audience a clear idea on what the film is
about. The scene shows a party in an apartment in New York City, then an
earthquake happens and everyone looks outside to see what is going on, in the
distance there is a massive explosion with debris falling down on the city of
New York, ending with the statue of liberty’s head rolling down the street.
The positive aspects of this trailer is that it doesn’t give
too much of the plot away, so the people who watch the trailer will want to
watch the film to see what happens next after the end of the scene shown in the
trailer. It also uses collision cutting as it shows from the jolly party in the
apartment to jagged shots of explosions to the head rolling down the street,
this emphasises the dramatic change in the plot line of the film. It also is
ideal for the target audience of the film as it is aimed at 15-25 year olds as
the film is only a 15 certificate.
The negative aspects of the trailer is that it was a risky
move showing a scene from the trailer as if a scene that gives away a lot of
the plot of the film but attracts the audience to watch your film but
Cloverfield got it right as it doesn’t give a lot of the plot away but does
keep the audience intrigued in what happens next in the trailer. It also has no
scary moments in the trailer despite it being a horror film, this may target
the wrong type of audience as by the trailer it looks like a disaster movie and
not a horror trailer.
The overall score the class gave on this trailer is 8
because it was a clever made trailer as it uses handheld camera to make the
film more realistic and it also include other shots like canted angles to
emphasise that the film is a horror trailer.

Favourite Image Analysis
My favourite scene and image from my horror research is from
Reuben Fleischer’s Zombie land (2009).
This scene uses different uses of the horror genre checklist,
such as it uses loads of body horror
and gore when Tallahassee is shooting the zombies, it also uses creepy locations as it is set in an
abandoned theme park.
This scene also uses character archetype for Tallahassee as
he is portrayed as the male hero
with the phallic symbol of his gun
to sacrifice himself to save the others, but he survives as Zombie land
is a Horror/Comedy it would ruin the comedy of the film if one of the main
characters in the film dies at the end of the narrative.
I want to make this type of horror but without the comedy
aspects to maintain seriousness. A straight action/horror would still combine
two of the most popular film genres together so still would gain a wider range
of audiences due to being multi-generic.

Moodboard
1- We have chosen to include the infamous killer Ed Gein within our mood board because we have decided to base our killer 'Father Crowthorne' on his innocent nature to the point where people contextually didn't suspect him. We feel that this change will have the ability to shock audiences more as opposed to having an outright killer.
2- Jekyll and Hyde is another ode to the idea of two sides to people in one persons body, this way we can really emphasise the idea of a monster character residing under the innocent and calming layer of a religious figure. Dr. Jekyll in the novel was a respected gentleman throughout the town, and people came to him for advice and services, but little did they know he turned into a murderer after the transformation.
3-For the third image on our mood board, we chose to include a historical figure of Father Hans Schmidt of Germany. In 1913, Schmidt was having a sexual relationship with a housemaid, who he got pregnant. After finding out about this, Schmidt slit her throat and cut her up, disposing of her body in the East River. We chose to include him because we felt we could base our killer around Hans and his murderous intentions.
4- Norman Bates, is the sweeter side to a schizophrenic personality from Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO (1960) We have included Bates because much like the Hans Schmidt choice, we can base the sweeter side of our killer 'Father Crowthorne' around that. Hitchcock's choice of this innocent character made the 'big reveal' all the more satisfying for audiences, we hope to recreate that effect within our own horror trailer.
5- The graveyard is within our mood board for a couple of reasons, the first being that it is a typical location within the horror genre. At night it can be used as a very spooky and creepy location in which the main action of a horror movie can happen. As a group, we wanted to include a scene within a graveyard for an ironic reason as well as a sickening one for our audiences, the irony being people dying in a place where the dead are already buried.
6- Our horror trailer is going to have a really Gothic feel to it, in the sense that we have a priest murdering "sinners"and this is why we have included one of the most influential horror writers to date. Edgar Allen Poe made it onto the mood board because his work is creepy and a good example for horror fans. We wanted to pay ode to Edgar Allen Poe by looking at his texts and possibly using some of his work to influence our creative process.
7- NUN (2005) is a movie about a ghost nun who has come back to haunt former students, we felt we should include this on our mood board because it's similar to what we want to do with the idea of a religious figure murdering for the sake of it, but rather than have an apparition doing the haunting, we want an actual serial killer.
8- For one of the highlights within our trailer, we wanted to have "holy water" burning away at a victim's face. If we are to do this then we need to recreate the effect with latex and the building up of layers using tissue paper. We needed to research into different horror makeup effects with latex for burns and the one of the mood board is the one we wish to try and recreate, it looks severe and very bloody. As a group we wanted to have gore in the trailer, and this is how we wish to do it.
9- This is a piece of religious art depicting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ whilst pictured inside a larger picture of Jesus Christ's head. Our group felt inspired by this art work because it helps to capture the mood of the church we'll be using to shoot our trailer within. We felt we needed to look into and include religious art and texts in order to capture the overall feel of the location.
10- This is a picture of the actual church we will be filming our trailer at, we felt we should include it on our mood board because it will be the main setting for the trailer, also a church is a typical horror location, and helps to tie in with the graveyard location well. This way we shall have a continuous ambiance throughout the trailer.
11-The picture of the mist is included in the mood board because firstly, mist is a natural horror convention, and is used to deceive and disorientate audiences. we included this because mist is also because it has an element of the unknown, and that's what we wish to capture within our trailer. We want to shock audiences with stuff they don't see coming.
12- This line from William Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' is interesting because it pays tribute to biblical terms, it mentions hell and how that devils ram the earth. this comment about people being evil is interesting as it's how we wish to base our killer character, we want him to be part demon underneath the skin of an innocent priest.
13- This is an image that is relevant to the context of the time, we now have female priests being included within the church system. We wanted to include the female priest because we are using a 'final girl' whom is a priest and it's through her purity that she tries to eradicate the father.
14- The director Tom Six has been included on our mood board because we want to push boundaries within our trailer much like the movies of Tom Six. One of our shots is a male victim being penetrated through the skull with a crucifix which is a controversial idea in itself. Our trailer wants to include some of the raw cinema elements within it that makes it difficult to watch in order to help convey the idea of horror in a big way to our audiences.

Synopsis
Father Crowthorne, priest of the parish Smallton, finishes
his weekly service and talks to members of his congregation as they leave. On
the way out Mrs. Dawes, an elderly woman, states how small the congregation has
become and how some “young blood” is needed. The Father replies that a young
female Vicar is moving to the church and they both agree it’ll be for the best
to keep sin away. Before leaving, he starts to hear whispering and as he gets
closer to the back of the church it gets stronger but disappears before he gets
to close. Slightly shaken he leaves the church and goes home but before he
falls asleep he hears the whispering again.
The next day, whilst the Father is walking through the town
he sees someone moving in to an old house and greets them. He discovers that
it’s the new female Vicar; Reverend Kerry O’Reilly and her husband Andrew. She
invites him in, and over tea, they talk about her backstory, why she moved. The
Father thanks her for coming and states he believes there’s too much sin in the
world before leaving to go to the church.
On the way to the church, he sees people closing up their
shops for the night or walking their dogs and haves casual passing
conversations. He arrives at the church just as night falls to lock up and
after inspecting it, he makes a prayer. He turns to leave and halfway down the
aisle hears the whispering. As he gets closer to the source it tells him to
kill sinners and becomes so loud that it drives him to his knees, screaming
before he passes out. After he wakes up he gets out of the church, and sees two
lovers in the graveyard. Influenced by the words he hears; he murders the pair
with a crucifix as they try to escape, whilst quoting the Bible. After the act is done the Priest drags the
bodies through to a corner of the graveyard finds a shovel and buries the
bodies.
The following Sunday Reverend O’Reilly prepares for her
first sermon and gets to the church early with her husband. Father Crowthorne
is sitting in the first pew, muttering to himself and when disturbed appears
startled and worried. Throughout the service Reverend O’Reilly keeps looking at
a shaking Father Crowthorne and after the service he disappears into his office
without saying a word despite being approached by the Reverend. In his office
he looks at the cut on his wrist from the first murder before sitting back and
falling asleep. He wakes up to hear noise outside and investigates but is
attacked by a group of 3 boys and gets cut on his head. They are stealing but,
before they escape, Father Crowthorne kills one of the boys by bashing his head
against a wall and knocks one out after a fight whilst the other boy escapes.
All the while he is chanting the Bible.
The 2nd boy awakes tied to a chair where after a short
dialogue with Father Crowthorne is baptised in “holy” acid water. The cut on
the Fathers wrist enflames and his skin burns. The 3rd boy has ran to the
Reverend’s house and explained the situation. O’Reilly, her husband and the boy
make their way up to the church and when they enter they see the corpse still
tied to the chair at which point a burned Father Crowthorne appears. He
explains he has to kill to eradicate sin. The 3rd boy is pounced by Crowthorne
and has his neck chewed before being pulled off by Andrew who he in return
kills with knife. He then lunges in to kill O’Reilly and after a short scuffle
they end up on their knees. Crowthorne starts to approach O’Reilly who prays
for her live when Crowthorne grabs her throat. His hands start to burn up and
he lets go of her as she’s pure and innocent. With his power spent he falls to
the floor and O’Reilly sees the devilish mark on his wrist and discovers he’s
part demon. He asks to die as he realises he’s sinned and as a way of
peacefully killing him, O’Reilly forgives him and places a hand on his cheek
resulting in him turning to dust. With Crowthorne dead she goes to her
husband’s corpse and starts to mourn. The film ends with O’Reilly hearing a
faint whispering.
Stereotypical Fan
Our stereotypical horror fan is a male called Gary Knights
(left). His day job is being an a electrician but once he gets in from a hard
day of fixing plugs and wiring sockets he likes to sit down and immerse himself
in classic horror films like Night of the Living Dead, Psycho and The Shining.
Apart from horror films Gary likes playing video games, either by himself or
online with other people, playing guitar, going bowling or spending time with
his girlfriend Liz Mendoza, pictured centre. He met Liz at a special screening
of Troll 2 and after both disliking the film thought dating each other might be
better. Gary dislikes few things as he is a hardened man from the levels of
horror he’s watched but he most definitely dislikes romantic comedy films and
broccoli along with having an up and down relationship with his clingy younger
brother Keith who sometimes doesn’t get the hint he isn’t wanted.
Gary’s demographic profile concludes that he is a 28 year
old, white British male at the upper end of the working class living in London.
His psychographic is reformer as he tries to change the mainstream in an
attempt to make the world a more positive place.

Type Of Horror Trailer
Type of Horror Trailer
“PRIEST”
The type of trailer we are going to make is a highlights
trailer because this will allow us to show off the best bits from our film to
grab the audience’s attention. This type of trailer is the most common, and its
content can be seen in the trailer below.
Our trailer for Priest will also focus on
collision cutting as this gets across the emotion of what is happening
throughout the film and will also briefly tell the audience what the plot line
of the film is. The trailer will also need some jump scares to grab the
audience’s attention so they remember our film, and come and see it when it
comes to the cinema. An example of a jump scare in a trailer is the woman in
black trailer which has a good jump scare so the audience remember the film.
Just before the jump scare there needs to be a build of
suspense so the jump scare becomes scarier as no-one will be expecting it, and
that is what good horror trailers are remembered for.
A good film that uses this type of trailer is Dawn of the Dead (2004) as this
uses all of the good aspects of a horror trailer that we should try to feature
in ours, such as good collision cutting and good use of body horror.
These generic features clearly help the trailer indicate an
Action Horror film so the audience knows if our genre/sub-genre is the right
film for them to watch.
